By the seaside …

After a few exciting days of safari with early morning wake ups or intensive sightseeing around country a spell of beachcombing life will seem quite inviting, indeed

Although South Africa has kilometres of coastline not all spots are suitable for beach holidays. Violent under currents are not uncommon and sudden huge surging waves can strike on even the most innocuous looking beach. It’s a must therefore to know where to go and which beaches are safe for swimming.

Maputoland´s unspoiled beaches
In northern Zululand, near Mozambique, Maputoland’s long, deserted, sandy beaches lie undisturbed. Here you will find Thonga Beach , where you can enjoy days on end in magnificent unspoiled surroundings and take a dip at your ease in The Indian Ocean.

There are also several excellent protected beaches and resorts in areas north and south of Durban, and on the less accessible Wild Coast.

The southern tip of the continent
Plettenberg Bay, on the Garden Route further south, is renowned for its long stretches of golden beach and clear blue lagoons. The high level of protection given to bathers here makes ‘Plett’ one of South Africa’s most attractive holiday destinations and many people own summer houses here.

Further west, roughly 150 km east of Cape Town, lies the charming fishing village of Arniston and Cape Agulhas, Africa’s most southern point. The high sand dunes are reminiscent almost of the Sahara. You can stroll through the dunes, study the area’s vast species of birds, or perhaps take a refreshing dip.

Cape Town´s many fine beaches
And last, but by no means least, the beautiful and protected beaches around Cape Town. The water may be slightly on the cool side considering this is the Atlantic, with its cold currents washing in on the coast.

Or take a trip to Muizenberg, where water temperatures are quite often ten degrees higher. Its white sand makes this one of the most popular beaches in the area and only a mere 45 minute drive from Cape Town.

Only a few hotels have seaside locations. Many coastal guesthouses were originally wealthy villas, most usually built on hillsides commanding panoramic views.

Most beaches offer a wide selection of activities from surfing to diving and deep-sea fishing.

But if a more sedate pace is preferred you can saunter at your leisure by the water’s edge, enjoying life and sun, and fresh sea air.
