The Garden Route

The celebrated Garden Route weaves its way along 300 kilometres of South Africa’s southern coastline from Mossel Bay in the west to the amber-coloured Storms River in the east, meandering through the deep Tsitsikamma woods, the dusty Karoo plain and Cape Town’s hustle and bustle

On the face of it, it may seem something of an exaggeration to associate a main thoroughfare, the N2, with scenic beauty. But the views from many minor roads and vantage points here affirm why this is South Africa’s answer to the Riviera, a place where the more select spend their weekends and holidays.

Easy to visit
Charming hotels and guesthouses with panoramic sea views or positioned on slopes looking out over spacious valleys house fine restaurants in all price categories. The area is highly accessible no matter from which direction you arrive.

If you would like to come down from Johannesburg or Durban after a safari frequent flights connect with Port Elizabeth and the capital of the Garden Route, George.

Hire a car or take the train
You can hire a car and explore at your own pace. The roads are top class and with a customised tour plan from Liberty International you can safely tank up and set out on an adventure. Liberty International, of course, will take care of all the details and make sure your car is at the station when you arrive.

If your dream of Africa is to relive a long lost ambience from an era when travel was travel, journeying as in the days of yore on Rovos Rail from Cape Town provides a quaint alternative. These luxury, newly renovated steam driven trains are a must for connoisseurs.

Awesome beaches
The beaches here all but lure you to take a dip in the warm Indian Ocean. However, as the undercurrent can be strong in places finding the right beach is important.

The fine white sands of Wilderness and Keurboom or the clear blue lagoons of Plettenberg Bay come highly recommended. The bay is a natural harbour and a slow paced sail shows off the coastline from a different angle.

Golf and ostriches
Some of South Africa’s newest and more challenging golf courses are within easy reach. The exclusive Fancourt Hotel and the Country Club near George are worth noting.

There are also a number of local 18-hole courses near Plettenberg, Knysna and Oudtshoorn. The latter is situated inland near the Klein Karoo plain and offers the added attractions of the stalactite Cango Caves and the world’s largest ostrich farm.
